Well, allegedly the Philadelphia mint made 12,000 business strikes in 1895 and of course, none have ever been seen. My B&M guy who is a bit of a Morgan Genius thinks that the 12 bags of business strike 95 Morgans were melted in 1918. OTOH, the dollar that the Philadelphia mint used for the assay in 1895 was a proof.
Sad to think that they were all melted, that's if they were ever struck in the first place. How cool would it be if those 12 bags were discovered one day. I'm sure they would fetch a hefty price tag to say the least .
If they never melted a single one it would be, by far, the lowest mintage of all the Morgans. I mean, look what a 93-S costs and they made 77,000 of those, except that virtually all of those were released into circulation, Dave Bowers said in his book that a hoard of 20 MS ones were found and that one bag was alleged to exist, but who knows. I doubt the bags will show up, none were ever paid out and none were released either in the run on the treasury or via the GSA.
Yes like around 250K in 64 or a mere 90K in MS 60 for the 93-S? Cost of a house or a 3 in Kansas. You must be a CEO (not of a bank under Obama's new regime I hope), or a very successful business owner. I have properties and make a nice salary and it blows my mind who can afford these coins. More power to them- the American dream as once possible when we used to have flourishing capitalism. Sorry, I got political.:hatch::hammer:
I agree IMO truly I don't believe the 12,000 coins were ever minted. In Bowers Red Book Guide to Morgan Dollars (Which is just a fantastic book btw) he refrences a article from Coin Review that states the 12,000 mintage figure for 12,000 1894 Morgans not 1895's. I think that's the most probable situation, but it's always fun to think "what if". -Mike
