Yeah, You really have to look at your goals, If i had millions i would Collect everything i could get my hands on because it,s all cool stuff But of course iam not....LOL, But maybe someday! But not today! The best next thing is to put all your banana,s in one basket For me that,s Mpc, Call me narrow minded, But in order to get the Very best and the highest quality, Money can only go one place!! Speaking of that i just picked up another real rarity, Should have In about a week, Iam not going to tell you what it is, It,s a suprise Look for it, I will post in the money thread!!:high5:
I'm having fun with several things: 1) US small sized Silver Certificates. I am at the beginning in collecting these, so the scope is currently aimed at the $1s, $5s and just window shopping the $10s, for the time being. I have just a few $1s and $5s at this time, not great grades and some roughly circulated. Not sure how far I can go with these due to prices becoming a challenge, but I want to see what I can find. 1a) The large silvers really intrigue me, those big blue seals... gotta have one some day. 1b) I also like $2s so the series 1899 is a one-off goal for me after looking through the paper money catalogs and lingering on these. 1c) Some of the small sized $2 red seals are cool too. I have a couple raw and crunchy, but I want a nice one, maybe graded. 2) Italian currency from the unified nation of Italy is of interest to me. I've traveled to Italy a number of times and love spending time there. I remember spending Lira notes before the Euro came about. I think some of the odd sized (squarish) notes from the 1940s and 1950s have some pretty intricate and cool monochromatic designs while others a bit later on in the 50s and 60s are simpler (cleaner) designs with multicolor printing and effects. Just a neat oddity to have and enjoy that aspect of the culture which I have admired in person. 2a) Allied Military Currency - Issued in Italy, Series 1943 (and 1943-A): √1 Lira, √2 Lire, √5 Lire, √10 Lire... Need: 50, 100 and 1000 Lire Rusty got me hooked up with a few of these. I had a single beat up 1 Lira note from my family from the era these were issued. I was intrigued to find the others and in better condition. So this is a sub-category of collecting notes for me. 3) Hungarian currency. The inflationary notes are a real gas. Very intricate notes with Million and Billion denominations! However, the regular smaller Florint notes, immediately post WWII era are quite intricate, utilize interesting dimensions and some muted color schemes, offer interesting scenes of landscapes and powerful portraits. I am not into the heavily propagandistic Soviet era stuff, just the aesthetics of some of their old transitory currency. I saw an eBay seller selling some Hungarian notes with a 'funny' line of copy written into his item description which sums up the era, 'The Russians are coming and Germany is on the run.' Clever. 4) Regional Currency. This is something I have not yet begun to collect nor have I ever had the opportunity to earn/spend. This is a realm rich enough for a thread all it's own. Basically, if you don't know what regional currency is, it's local scrip currency, such as: BerkShares, Ithaca Hours, The Baroon Dollar, et al. It's been slowly cropping up all over the world in roughly the last 10 years or so. What intrigues me is not the politics behind it all, but the possibility that designers of these notes may be local artist or crafts persons... everyday creative type people, not just long-term hardened trained BEP-type engraver employees. There are some really interesting note designs in Germany, that incorporate very colorful reproductions of illustrations and abstract fine art. Some of these can be found in the World / Paper Money categories on eBay for a few bucks per note from time to time. Trading one international currency like the USD to collect an EU regional note is an interesting thing to ponder in and of itself. Anyway, those are some things that interest me right now in terms of notes.
I don't have any currency ambitions or plans. In fact, my paper money collection is kind of all over the place. I have a large size $2 note, but the rest is all small notes. Hawaii note, North Africa note, mostly really common stuff but stuff that interests me nonetheless.
