The business is privately owned so they can refuse to accept cash. When that happens to me I tell them to keep the item and walk out. I take my business elsewhere.

The question is referring to a Healthcare Provider.
Would you walk out in such a scenario?
There are VERY legitimate reasons for Healthcare Providers not accepting Cash.

If the healthcare provider doesn’t take cash there’s always another one that does the same thing that will. It’s called customer service and I place a high value on customer service.

I do. I pay cash for nearly everything I purchase for personal use and consumption.

Some people like to pay cash as a means to avoid impulse buying and staying out of dept. When the allotted cash runs out, you stop buying. Easy peasy budgeting. However, I realize that most people these days use credit cards. I do for most of my purchases. But I carry cash for those vendors who want to add 4% on my purchase for using a credit card.

That would have been a valid retort on behalf of consumers utilizing the services of Healthcare Providers 20 years ago.

It is not valid now. Consider that Healthcare Providers risk CMMS/Healthcare Insurance Providers Audits for doing so, especially when the cash payment for Insurance Deductibles (and in some situations Copays) is not filed with the Insurance Carrier, and may violate Balance Billing requirements, and....if the entity is a Regional Group or Super Group and/or Hospital.....violate Stark.

It is a lot of Wampum if fined, and there are practices that have paid 5K-15K, especially since ACA. That is not the only Penalty, because the Provider also risks loss of Credentialing with CMMS. That is a Death Penalty for the Provider.

There are many other scenarios that may have impact, such as Liability policies that exclude on premises Cash, HR violations, CC Fees, etc., as brief examples. It is not as easy as telling the Patient a percentage is paying with a CC/DC, etc.

It is not just a cost of doing business thing.

The blogs about paying yourself for Deductibles/Copays saves money if the individual has substantial deductible before insurance covers, is Baloney, except in very rare cases, and can also trigger loss of coverage.

Reading the 2,300 page ACA, with Amendmendments added as of March 2024, or the CMMS Stark Rules, and the individual Healthcare Insurance Policy (every Insurance Provider entity has different requirements) helps explain the complexity.

I agree with the thrust of the pay cash position. That does not transfer into costing myself problems, and fishing from a bass boat when the boat has a hole in the deck letting water flow in.

Truth in editing: added a ")', and the words "...helps explain the complexity".

I use a single, cashback, credit card to make all purchases that don't charge a credit card fee. All other purchase are bank debit or "echeck". I then pay off the credit card balance every month. Why not let the credit card company pay me to spend money on regular purchases. I never impulse buy and never worry about the "cost" of anything. I make purchases based on "value" and I always negotiate prices whenever possible, even at major retail stores. I maintain a budget and use my credit cards free spending application to stay on budget. I just haven't had to use cash; even vending machines now take debit cards.

Oh dear, Google's at it again.

The excerpt in the search result doesn't appear anywhere on the linked page. The Mints, combined, struck something like 17 billion cents in 1982. To mint 55 quadrillion Lincoln cents at that rate, it would have taken them... a bit over 3 million years.

For each person in the US today, that would be about 166 million cents, weighing (if they were all Zincolns) a bit over 450 tons per person. Good news: we'd all be millionaires! Bad news: we'd all be crushed.
