How do you tell the difference between a likely ms/pf 69 vs a ms/pf 70?

That probably adds up to about the requisite 10,000 hours needed to make someone be able to achieve mastery of something (see the book "outliers" for this theory), assuming you put in about an hour and a half per day over those 10 years.

I read in other forums that it is darn near impossible to get 70's for the hockey pucks. They're so big that it is very easy to get dings on them.

I have several 70 grades that don't belong on my coins. One in particular is reasonably expensive. (Mid four figures.) So what do I do when I or my children sell it? Tell people they are bidding on an overgraded coin by a premier TPG? In this case, getting a 70s grade on a coin doesn't help the owner when it comes time to sell. I have yet to figure out how to handle or approach this.

Did you submit it for grading or did you buy it already graded? Which TPGS certified it? Is it possible to submit it for grade review and possible compensation if it is downgraded?

Note: If you submitted it, I don't think you would be entitled to any compensation.

I submitted it. However, if I wanted to be unethical, I could sell it to a good friend of the family and let him contact the TPG for me. I don't have an axe to grind with the TPG, so I won't put that name out here. It could end up starting a preference debate.

    A 1964-D Kennedy graded MS69 or MS70?:foot-mouth:

I don't think there is such a critter in PCGS or NGC plastic, it just doesn't exist

Most of them do...this is because of the criteria we use for grading. Wear is considered the greatest fault above all else. If a coin has no wear but has a ton of bag marks it will be graded MS60...while a coin with perfect surfaces but a tiny hint of wear will be AU58. The AU58 is a much nicer looking coin but based on current grading standards is technically inferior.

As for the MS69 vs MS70 debate...I'm sure at some level there is a very minor difference when comparing a coin of each grade...but to my eyes that flaw on the 69 is undetectable, so to me the coins are the same.

I wouldn't have an ATB-P graded unless I was getting ready to sell it.

Supposedly, you grade with a 5x loup. I'm in agreement that there is no practical means to make this distinction and would prefer if the MS70 and PF70 were eliminated as grades

That book sucks, but fwiw, I doubt even 100 years of 24/7 grading can really make this distinction.

I'm going to write a paper one day about how much of an idiot Gladwell is, and annotate the hundreds of errors in his books.
