I use safeflips and store them mainly in boxes. I do have albums but albums take up a lot of room, so right now am consolidating from albums to boxes for ancients. For world, some come in cardboard, others I put in safeflips, and still others are in bags. Heck, I even have some in manila envelopes. Bottom line I try to move the stuff I really care for into archival safeflips. If its cheaper stuff already in something archivally safe I can leave it. Anything in soft pvc plastic, though, has to go.
I'm an old man and take a lot of prescription drugs. Those handy dark colored pill bottles which come in different sizes come in handy for storing excess coins. Dave
When it come to those who use SDB's, what do you look for in a SDB site? Also, is there any reason in particular you use SDB instead of a safe?
I have two SDBs. Both are in older neighborhoods. My thinking is no one would risk robbing the SDB vault of a small bank.
SDB's are hard for someone to break in and hold a gun to your head asking for the combination. Yes, I own guns, but I cannot sleep with my hand on the trigger of a loaded gun. For which SDB, I chose convenience even though I do not access it often. I want the ability to drop stuff off into there whenever I feel like. I have a 14"x14"x3' right now, but may have to get another box soon. This one is a BEAR to lift.
Some are in Capital plastic holders. Some are in Dansco albums with pages specifically designed to hold the individual coins or sets. Some coin sets (cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, & half dollars) are in Whitman folders Some are in cardboard 2x2s inside Dansco albums 12 coins to a page. Some are in cardboard 2x2s inside archival 20-pocket pages in 1/2" binders. * Some are in cardboard 2x2s stored in double row boxes that hold about 300 coins per box. * Some larger coins are in 2x2 flips & then stored same as cardboard 2x2s. Some larger coins are in 2.5 x 2.5 flips & then stored in slab boxes. Some thick coins are in 2x2s and then stored in Eagle 9-pocket slab pages in 1/2" binders. etc. * These describe the primary storage of my raw coin collection.
Some are in albums, many are in cardboard 2x2's (not especially valuable ones), a few are in their original mint packaging still. My 1963 proof set is in a capital holder.
I used to have them in 2x2's, but now I've been transfering them to Saflips with their information on a card in the other pocket.
Individual mint state coins have recently been housed in Lighthouse coin capsules. All of my proof and uncirculated sets remain in their original government packaging stored in special archival boxes purchased from University Products, in date order by country (USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa). Approximately 1000 rolls of wheat cents, Canadian cents and Jefferson nickels, all withdrawn from circulation, are stored in several old Italian wooden wine boxes. Circulated coins are in glass jars or coin tubes.
