How do you feel about coin certification by the big three (ANA, NGC, PCGS)?

For a collector, that might be good advice these days. The wait times have become very long, and the costs, including shipping, have gotten very high. I submitted three items that had a declared value of about $1,100 at the FUN show at the economy rates. The total coins have come to $147, and I am supposed to get them back this week or next.

For a dealer it's a different story. One way to make money when I was dealer was to buy raw and get it graded. It was always a crap shoot, but usually I came out well on top financially. The biggest challenge was to find the raw stuff to buy.

"Expensive" is relative.....for some, a $200.00 coin is expensive. For others, not so much until you get above $2,000.00. What is "expensive" to you in this context?

Just curious. Do you crack out the coins and put them in a Dansco 7070 Type Set book? Or, is there another way you "display" your Type Set? I use the Dansco 7070, but my coins are likely much lower grade/value than yours! :)

Virtually all of my coins are graded by one of the big 3, with most of them by PCGS. I've never cracked out a coin. I've listed some of them on the PCGS Registry site, and you can create a digital album on the site that allows you to display both sides of each coin in an enlarged version.

Depends on the series and date. I see raw 93S Morgan’s on eBay sometimes. First question I ask myself is why that coin isn’t certified.

Most of my coins are in PCGS and NGC slabs. But I own a few ANACS and ICGs that I think are solidly graded. I used PCGS to grade some 2021 Morgans and Peace. Took a few months. ANACS fired back six Daniel Carr fantasy overstrikes in two weeks. Have two others at ICG now.

I have a much larger budget that most collectors. Still I think it's all relative. In my previous example, I thought that $147 to get three items that are worth $1,100 is expensive. That's more than 10% for a holder and an opinion. That opinion might be worth a lot in the market, but you have got to have a 10% increase in the market to get your money back.

No, I don't crack them out - nor any coins slabbed by PCGS or NGC.
I believe that coins will survive better if kept slabbed.
And my choice of TPGs is either PCGS or NGC.

Coins I've had in other slabs (ANACS, ICG, SEGS, PCI, etc.) are generally sold and replaced with coins in PCGS or NGC slabs.
On a few occasions I have crossed them to PCGS or NGC.
