How do we know what Roman coins were called?

    With all due respect to Google Translate, it's nummus (plural nummi), a masculine noun. From the Greek νόμος, also masculine, ultimately from the root νέμ- "to distribute". Nummum is the inflected spelling for the accusative case when used as the object of a sentence. Latin and Greek grammatical gender is not always the same as physical gender.
