We are about 10 miles from the beach and approximately 9-10 feet above sea level. I would say that is far enough, and high enough. However, we had some really heavy rains in the area about one week ago and the canal in front of our house got to within 1-1,5 ft (level-wise) from the level of our house. That has me a little worried if it rains really heavily. Thank you, kkathyl0! For insurance purposes, I think it is important to have proof you did what you could to protect your home. Luckily, my coins are in a SDB about 10000 miles away from here (I wish we were there too). Regarding our neighbors - some of them are elderly, and my wife, to her credit, actually had the strength to go out and help out two of them to install their storm shutters - in the middle of the day, in full sunshine and with 96F heat! Please stay safe!
