I have a 1965 quarter that is heavily damaged. Can anyone tell me how it got this way?

Kyle, I appreciate your curiosity about this. What I'm curious about is why things like this piece are interesting to you. I genuinely do not understand. Every fiber of my being, with over 50 years in numismatics, tells me to immediately dismiss a piece like this without giving it a second thought. I am fascinated about how our "instincts" can so severely diverge. "Different" was never interesting to me, only "excellence" ever was.

you would have to find all the people who handled this coin since 1965 and ask if any of them know, otherwise its just a guessing game....

    Very well, and concisely, said.

Would a 1965 Chevy Impala in this condition have this question asked about it? Probably not. Someone would think it had been in a demolition derby.
