It's easy to tell if someone is keeping up the pace or not, even if you aren't watching them if they're doing something that has a set "quota". I work in an office attached to a factory. Our factory guys work on incentive jobs. There are established standards for each job. If they produce to the standard, they get the basic rate. Produce above the standard, and they get additional pay. If the produce below standard, they only get their minimum rate. It's easy to see if they're doggin' it.

Unloading a truck, I'm sure they know how quickly it should be done. They can tell if you're keeping up the expected pace, or if you just can't keep up (or aren't trying to keep up). For whatever reason, they said you weren't keeping up the pace.

    It hasn't been mentioned but...

I worked in the Fedex Ground hub for three years. There are numbers above the chutes that show exactly how many packages per hour are being unloaded/loaded. So literally a boss can be never set eyes on you and know exactly how many packages you are processing. I would bet a large amount of money UPS has something similar.

My son is a shift manager for UPS commercial shipping. His job is to supervise the loading and off loading of trucks. He is responsible for making sure all deadlines are met. The work environment is cold, hot, dirty, and noisy. He works long hours and sometimes has to attend staff meetings at the end of a 12 hour shift. Everything he tells me about his jobs screams STRESS. However he busts his butt everyday to be the very best supervisor at his facility. He will be the big boss one of these days. My advise to him was to always do the best job possible. As long as you are putting their money in your pocket, you have to do the job the way they want it done. If you don't want to, or can't do that, then find another job or work for yourself.

UPS is a hard driver, but succeed there and you will do well. Detecto should have researched how that company operates, they do everything according to a schedule of time allotments. Fedex is similar and well some of that played out in that Tom Hanks movie "Castaway" particularly the Moscow scenes with all the stopwatches and rushes. UPS even has their drivers drive a proscribed rout that avoids left turns whenever possible because they have determined that they take more time and burn more fuel making left turns.

The problem is that he is 20 years old, living at home with parents, no job, no school and no reality. I have three teenagers, all in high school and they all have jobs. My wife and I determined a long time ago that they would have to have jobs if they wanted to spend money on extraneous stuff like clothes they want etc. Sure we live in a place with near double digit unemployment, but my kids having all sorts of volunteer hours from middle school on up to current were easy picks for potential employers because they validated their work history with verifiable volunteer work. My two daughters have "comfortable" jobs, ie daycare and another works with children. My son though has a job as a cook in some stinky fish restaurant with a miserable boss. But in the several months he has been working there he has gotten three pay raises - because he is reliable, honest and works hard.

I've got to ask...Isn't McDonalds / local grocery store / Walgreen's/ whatever hiring? I mean at least one of those places? A "snap no" I have to feel is incorrect.

He probably blows all interviews by telling them about his UPS experience and how they pulled one over on him. As someone who did hiring in the past this is a big red flag, you in anyway trash on a former employer and victimize yourself and in my mind the interview is over you're not worth hiring. Many many hiring HR or managers follow the same protocol, we simply don't need people who take no responsibility working for our company. As I said in my former post there's a reason no place will hire him for a normal person eventually this realization is a slap in the face and a wake up call.
I truly used to feel bad for Detecto when seeing his posts and seeing how people responded to him. Key word is used too, after seeing enough of his posts he always acts as if he knows it all, asks advice but never heeds it, takes the victim stance always, and justifies his actions or inaction with innumerable excuses as to why it's not him; its everyone but him. I realize now that many members of this forum who Detecto probably thinks are out to get him are really trying the last resort most parents go to with their children, tough love. But trying to help and give advice doesn't work unfortunately until he experiences enough of this for himself it's basically like talking to a wall. I personally don't mean to offend or pick on him. But people offer advice, because we've been their we've had the experiences. He makes it seem as if older forum members had it any easier achieving things in life they don't understand his plight, when it's the reverse that is true. I'm only a decade older than Detecto, my brother is only five years older; I know how the economy is. However thinking your going to get some low paying job step one and then go on to accomplish all your others goals simply isn't going to work you'll end up nowhere. You'll never go beyond step one and never move beyond that low paying job. It's good you have a plan but you really need to either enroll in school or join the military. When you only have two options in front of you to move forward you pick one and go with it, not sit around waiting for the world to realize it owes you a favor because your never going to get that favor.

Does he have a cot in his office? Those are the guys that get ahead at UPS. They're also the ones with more than one marriage under their belts. The job is heck on family life.

At UPS, drivers must adhere to what is known as a 'planed day', that is a certain number of stops should be done in 'x' number hours. So, say 120 stops makes for an eight hour day and you complete the job in eight hours, you're a hero, right? Wrong.....UPS wants everything 'under plan'. It's not good enough to be par. They want you under par.

Kudos to you and your wife. One of the things lacking today is good old fashion "work ethic". My parents insisted that my brothers and I "work" during summer break. I spent 2 summers working as a volunteer candy striper at a local hospital and 2 summers working as a volunteer teachers aide at Head Start. I didn't make any money but boy did it ever prepare me for the real world of working for a living. Now this was in the 1960's when it was "easy" to find a job, and 10 times easier to lose a job. Back then you could and would be fired for being 5 min. late for work. No such thing as HR to save your butt. You either did your job or 10 people were waiting in line to do it." Yes Sir/Mam", was the correct response to a request from your supervisor, not "when is my break". I have hired many people wanting a "job", only to find out they didn't want to "work".

The jobs are out there, but the people aren't...What more can be said? There are the ones who want to work/need to work, and the ones who don't want to work/don't need to work.

Hopefully Detecto doesn't take this to heart too much and think he is getting attacked, because it is hard yet honest advice that he needs to take in. I see people on here giving him a hard time, but most of all I see people in a stern way just telling him how it is in the real word and it is good advise any young adult should appreciate and understand.

I want to work and do work but my temp agency takes more than half my wages. I feel like I have a pimp.

He has singled a couple of us out as "attacking" him, and yet he has apologized to me via PM. Seriously I would like to see him get it together, grow up, get a job and be responsible. I do not enjoy his trainwreck situation - I sort of feel like he is going Lindsay Lohan on us.

No cot, but it has been suggested. Fortunately he is single. I recall one time he drove 4 hours to enter a Bass tournament. Just as he got there, he gets a call to report to work for a "special" task. He had to turn around, go back, forfeit his entry fee, give up a weekend off. Only to find out they really didn't need him. But he did what he was told. Told him the next time, forget to take his phone. UPS pays well but it has no soul.

The main problem Detecto at least in terms of his financial/job situation has is he has no sense of responsibility because he does not have to. When you owe money to a seller and money to Paypal, and then when you get some money you set up another Paypal account to buy more coins instead of paying off your other ones...not only is it fairly sleazy but it also shows you don't value money as do most members of society. Whatever money he gets he spends on what he wants, which is coins.

What that means is he doesn't have to worry about food, rent, etc. etc. Plenty of people live off their parents so in that respect what he is doing is not so atrocious. However they aren't doing him any favors as he won't get a job until he HAS to get a job, and if he can afford to spend every last dollar on coins that clearly isn't going to happen soon.

    Just my opinion anyway.

Detecto, some advice that hopefully will be helpful for you. While you are continuing to send out applications don't just wait around for responses. Find some places in your area that you think would be good to work in and go ask them if they need any volunteer help. A lot of places are happy to have free help. You could do it a couple days a week, for a couple hours a day. If you do well and a job opens they just might ask you if you want it. If nothing opens up, you are still gaining valuable work experience that you can add to your resume/application and you will hopefully gain a few good references. One thing employers hate is gaps in a resume, so do whatever you can do fill in those blanks now and show them you are willing and able to work and can do a good job. Hope this helps, good luck with the search.

Temp agencies are just a stepping stone to something better - something to put on your resume as experience.

I know but it is still frustrating in the meantime.

Do you know many coins I could buy with the other half? :)

Not enough, at least according to my experience, lol.
