Above is a great description of me. I have coins I would like not to own any more but I am not sure I want the cash they would bring in trade for the hassle. That is why I so much prefer to sell/trade in person. Also there is the matter of whether I feel right telling you that the coin I am selling is worth owning. A dealer can do that but what I have that I would sell is something I don't want for my collection. I admit some curiosity if I could sell all my coins for what I paid over the last 50 years. I hope I'll never know that one.
You chaps seem very wise and you write extremely well, so I won't try to add too much to your spiels ... Umm, I guess one of the nice things about collecting coins as a hobby, is the fact that our coins are certainly going to be worth "something" if and when it's their time to be sold (hopefully not sold by me) ... some other hobbies seem like far bigger wastes of money than our chosen hobby => I have buddies that spend incredible amounts of cash on adult "toys and activities" (snow-mobiles, boats, quads, guns, fishing, cabins, golfing, trips, etc) => and although those things can be very cool/enjoyable as well, their end-value is most likely going to be far less than the value of my coin collection ... I guess ideally, a nice mix of both worlds would be the wisest and most healthy strategy? ... anyway ... I have "never" tried to sell any of my coins, so I fully admit that if the time ever comes, I really have zero-idea what my collection will be worth, but I'm fairly sure that you wise-men are correct => when I bought my coins I was hungry to buy 'em, so I probably paid top-dollar for them ... but if I was ever eager to sell them, then I would once again be the dude that was on the eager-side of making the transaction, so I may take a bit of a hit just to get rid of them (resulting in a pay-off that would be far less than my high-end purchase price) ... yah, I think I'm gonna keep these babies for as long as I can ... and I'm also not even going to consider them part of my retirement investment (my coins are merely my expensive hobby ... sadly, they're probably "not" gonna be my get-rich-quick scheme)
If you decide to sell your coins, for your very valuable coins will you use an auction house or broker them yourselves? Can you ask a dealer to sell on your behalf through private treaty?
