I must say I like the contrast between the oldfashoned coin - design and the science fiction - like look of their bankontes. The swiss commemoratives of the 70`s and 80`s really are some of the ugliest coins ever minted. Swiss numismatist and coindealer P . Divo actually wrote in a catalogue on swiss coins that " one can not understand what passes the striking commitee today. Some designs are barely recogniseable others seem to be disfigured. The effigy of Dunant lokks like a potato. "
I beg to differ. Granted, Switzerland did not regularly issue commemorative coins until 1974. (Just two in the 1930s, three in the 1940s, and one in 1963.) So the mid-1970s was a new starting point, and I suppose they wanted to be somewhat more modern. Sure, did not always work well, but they also issued beauties such as the Einstein or Le Corbusier coins in those years. Even a piece like the Stans Treaty coin I find quite attractive. Your mileage may vary of course. What I do not really like about Swiss commemorative or collector coins is the "new uniformity" of the obverse. Same design for each and every issue since mid-2004 ... Here's my 1962 10 rappen with a strike through debris. Thought it was a cracked planchet, but some CT members have correctly determined this to be a strike through. Love the Swiss coin design. And their cheese is great too!
