I honestly looked at this coin for an hour or so thinking I was seeing a doubled die rev, most prominent on Monticello. I'm pretty sure I'm wrong ofc. This die had really been beat to death and then some.On the other hand it shines like it just came from the mint....technically it did,but over 50 yrs ago. This came out of a mint roll. Not a true error but worth a gander. My father said "well it's not full steps, more like a ramp" lol...Sorry the pics aren't better,I tried my best with what I have on hand.
These 'S' Mints in the 50's are notoriously weakly struck.......and this one is struck from worn/overused dies.
Shucks! I would really have liked to see a Mint wrapper from 1954. I've never seen one that old. Chris
To my horrible eye...I would have thought that a DD. Fat letters with spread, splits on serifs....thats why I hang out here because I suck!
We tried to save them, they were falling apart b4 we even dug into em. They sat in an old barn in a cash box since the 50s. Was quite the experience,I'm used to opening zinc rotted bank rolls
I suck too...especially with identifying DDs....that's why I collect error coins. With that being said, and so I dont create a thread to embarrass myself, this 1 looks like a dd to me too. Can sum1 plz tell me I'm wrong so I can toss it
Given the condition of that coin, I would highly suspect that you have die deterioration doubling instead of a doubled die.
53 and 54 seemed to have a lot of issues. This is super mushy. There is damage on the reverse by the I in United. If it is Uncirc, it is details IMO.
Yes the punches were separate, but once they punched the mintmark into the die and then die experienced severe wear.......
I wasnt thinking clearly,I knew that Woulda been neat to have an S over D for 54,I havent found 1 yet
I have never seen a full step 1954-S Jefferson Nickel. The 54-S is notoriously the worst struck of the entire series but they are still much better quality than both the 1955 & 1958 Philly coins which are all abysmal. The two coins shown below demonstrate the range of quality of the 1954-S Jefferson Nickel. Worst I've Ever Seen: Best I've Ever Seen:
