Here's another NEWP for my Dansco.

Please guess the grade that PCGS assigned to the coin, and your grade if it differs:

As always, comments both good and bad are most appreciated.

    Have fun...Mike

I'm going to guess PCGS called the coin a 35.

I'm gonna say PCGS graded it VF25. My grade would be F15.

    F12.

Might go F15 on a good day.

Any higher and I'll buy these all day long to slab and resell for the plastic value.

Very tough to say whether it's VF-20 or VF-25. As a guess I'll say 25.

That is truly a nice coin.

I'm thinkin' VF25, assuming the streaks on either side of star #7 are on the slab. Same with color around OF on reverse.

Nice coin ! Very little funk in the fields.

OK, Scrooge, you're just as tight as ever.... :D

PCGS graded the coin VF 30.

My subjective opinion on the coin & grade:

I think the coin is as detailed as most VF 30s in this series that PCGS holders, but I happen to agree with others that it's a low-end VF at best with more traditional grading sandards. I'd technical grade it a choice VF 20 or 25 (and likely price it as a 30 or 35 ;) ).

If the coin did get a grade bump, it was because it got the benefit of the doubt for originality sake -- take a look at the bust quarters you see on the bourse or in your local shop. First off, you'll likely have trouble finding a large supply because they are rare. I suspect you'll see fifty or even one hundred bust halves for every bust quarter. And just like the bust halves, for every fifty or one hundred cleaned/damaged one you'll find one that looks problem-free and original-looking. IMO, the TPGs understand this very well and tend to give the better grades for the more original and eye appealing examples (i.e. market grading).

I love the dove grey coloration and "crusty" look to the coin. It has the smooth circulated look that I'm looking for in the older types, and I think it matches well with some other coins I've added to my collection recently.

Anyway, I appreciate all the guesses and comments (please keep them coming!), and as always... Have fun...Mike

For full disclosure: The coin cost me $285 (about 35 money), and I purchased it from Shawn Yancey, a copper dealer who I have purchased quite a few coins in my copper collection from.

I agree with Mike's assessment. Looks like a VF-20 coin that they bumped for originality. It is certainly worth choice VF money.
