Notice how the color changes on the high points that are worn - see how the high points have a gray tone to them ? Look at the ribbon in particular on the reverse - the gray stands out quite well against the copper color in the low areas adjacent. It is also readily visible on the leaves. On the obverse the gray tones contrast with the copper around the eye and LIBERTY. All the high points show the gray tone with the possible exception of some of the hair.
