It has been a very long time since my last purchase. Looking back on my records it has been approximately ten months. 2015 was a pretty difficult year financially but with careful budgeting (and a little help from my tax return) I have finally managed to get everything under control and carve out a very tiny coin budget. I was really attracted to the obverse of this coin since it isn't the typical portrait you see, or I feel like you see, everywhere. I am shamelessly using the auction houses photos since I do not have the coin in hand yet and my photo skills are lackluster anyway. I haven't had time to look into the attribution any further so let me know if you think there should be any amendments. Gallienus AR Antoninianus. Milan, A.D. 257. (19mm, 3.48g) IMP GALLIENVS PF AVG, Radiate and draped bust right. VICT GERM, Victory walking left holding wreath and palm, captive at foot. RIC V-1 404. Hopefully there will be more to come soon!
Very nice find, but it's not RIC 404 - 404 is a Virtus issue of Rome. I believe it's 435, with reverse legend VICT GER II (p. 169).
Wow, that's a very long wait! Glad you're back into buying mode. You picked a nice one for your comeback
NICE! GALLIENUS AR Antoninianus OBVERSE: GALLIENVS dot P dot F dot AVG, radiate, cuirassed bust left, holding spear over shoulder and shield on left arm REVERSE: VIRT GALLIENI AVG, Emperor walking right, holding transverse sceptre (point forwards) and round shield, treading down fallen enemy lying on ground before him Struck at Milan, 258-259 AD 2.94g, 22mm RIC 54 left[j]
Nice coin! I like the reverse type. Victory types with wings always look striking to me. Glad things are going better for you. What other types are you on the lookout for? John
Nice one Whizb4ng! I like the portrait. Here is my Gallienus / Victory Gallienus / Vict Germanicus, Silvered Billion Antoninianus, 253-268 AD O: GALLIENUS PF AVG, radiate bust rt. Rx: VICT GERMANICA, victory running left RIC 44
I could not even go one month without adding to the collection! I even think about coins when I am working!
Hell no! I am a self employed lawn/garden maintenance guy. I work mostly 8 months of the year/ seven days a week/dawn to dusk. So, I have five perks... drink cold beer on the job/ think about coins/ get a tan/ money for MORE coins!!!! and have Winter off for snowmobiling/coins/walking my Rottie named "Loki"
Wish you were in in Florida. I need someone to trim and train my bougainvillea, have a beer or two, and talk about Ancients. Hey man. Give me a break. I can dream can't I?
Awesome lil' pup ... curious, were you always a landscaper, or is that your retirement career? (I worked for a landscaping company for 7 years before I decided to go back to university ..... I still miss being on the business-end of the ol' shovel)
Oh wow, sorry Whiz => hey Manitoba, congrats on scoring a sweet new ancient coin!! (10 months!! ... what happens in your head?) ... is it nice and warm way down south in Winnipeg today?
