While I am very happy for you that you caught this in the wild, I pray someone did not steal this from someone else and threw it in the consumer mix. I hope there is someone who's heart has not been broken. It would be interesting to see if there are any police reports about any stolen coins from your area. It's possible but hard to fathom this not appearing before you found it being such a big deal coin.

True, but while there are a lot of coin roll hunters, many people do not look closely at their change. One of my first jobs was as a cashier. I would say that most people I dealt with never glanced at their change. People know to look for wheat pennies, but a doubled die is going to take a closer look. I remember one time getting a worn V nickel in change there. I would think that would make someone think twice.
While I admit some jealousy, I sincerely hope that this coin turns out to be legitimate.

Totally agree. My local X-Mart handed me a $10.00 gold certificate in change for a twenty. It happens that good finds are certainly possible but I even wondered how a gold certificate would be found in the wild in this day and age with everyone on the internet and on the hunt. I really hope this find is legit.

If this coin certifies as authentic/legitimate the details of this find will be published in this forum. Just waiting and watching now.

I’m betting it’s legit. This find will make it into remaining periodicals and websites. There are so few of these that a find is real news. This is only the second find raised in a forum in the past 10 years. So many wannabe posts that when this happens, it’s nearly unbelievable.

    Believe it this time.

Definitely, I hope that this was a folder or bunch of tubes, a small collection that a dealer passed on and told the customer to just spend them.

    @BBBeth
    What a beautiful site.
Markers are looking good, If real, I am happy to see a new collector get it.
Holy grail it is, still makes me wonder if someone has specialized his craft. It has always been the low grade examples that have passed the TPG acceptance.

@BBBeth that is definitely a find in the wild for the record books. Nicely done. I hope it turns out to be authentic.

Tommy, my thoughts were similar to yours. Then I got to thinking. I have a five gallon jug that I've been throwing pennies in for probably two decades. I know for a fact I'm not the only one who does this. The coins at the bottom of my jug only go back to the early 2000's. I know other folks that have jugs going back 30, 40, even 50 years, unsearched. These people sometimes exit this wonderful party having accumulated huge amounts of pennies only to have them deposited into banks to be rolled. And still unsearched.

Could this epic find have come from someone's collection? Absolutely. However, being that it's only a penny, what I'd consider the single most accumulated coin ever, it certainly could have been in a coin jar since before this variety was ever first discovered. So, trying to remain the trusting soul that I am, I'm hoping this find is not only legit, but also honorably found.

    Again, congrats @BBBeth .

The same thing occurred to me. Lots of penny jars all over the place. Who knows?

I believe there is still some treasure out there to be found. This is a coffee can that was given to me by a friend whose grandfather passed on to him. 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s that have not been searched . Can only imagine how many gramps cans are still out there. upload_2024-1-11_21-18-48.jpeg upload_2024-1-11_21-18-48.jpeg

"But it might have been stolen!!!" is a response that can be posted to any find, be it from change, or from a bank, or from the ground.

Even if it did come from someone's collection, it might have come by way of an heir who has no interest in coins, or an executor who has no interest and just cashes them in, or a person hired to clean out a house, or the buyer of a storage unit.

I know stolen coins occasionally find their way back into circulation. But it's not my first conclusion when somebody posts a great find.

As I mentioned, this is the second 1969 S DDO I’ve seen reported in a forum. It happens.

I’ve not made a $10,000 find. But I’ve found a Henning Nickel, a 1914 gold Ducat, and a silver bar while CRHing. Unusual finds. I’m sure many others have a spot find or two of significance. Just not as important a find as this.

Savor in the experience of other s good fortunes. Perhaps each of us gets a turn…or not.

But you’re one of our well wishers here and that’s important. You might have hit a dry spell…we all do…but you have your fun finds to recollect. I haven’t CRHed in a long time, so volume hasn’t been on my side. It’s a choice. But it doesn’t keep me from looking and hoping. Lady Luck might find me again!! You too, Sal!!

When I found my third 1982 no P dime CRH I was hooked. Had to switch to nickels for a while but still no Henning

If I remember correctly from Ken Potter's article the mint mark has strike doubling on the good ones
