A valid point, for valuable coins or rare and important ones.

when you’ve got a coin worth 5-25 cents, does it really matter?

Ironically engraving tends to increase the value of buffalos, so there’s that!

I am not trying to get into a p..... contest with you. I offered my opinion and there is a great difference between engraving and acid etching, again, my opinion. One method removes some surface material and leaves the original physiognomy. Engraving, however, alters the original impression of the coin.

I believe the statute also says that the coins or currency have to be currently in circulation. Buffalo nickels (and Morgan dollars, BTW, I've seen them very prettily carved) would not apply. But personally, I don't care for the practice.

The key here is FRAUDULENTLY. In other words the statue applied when coins are altered in such a way as t trick or scam the receiving end (plating a V nickel in gold and pawning it off as a gold piece, shaving (lightening) a billion coin while passing it off as full weight, etc)

I don’t think anybody is fooled into anything when they see a hobo nickel

You can get arrested unless you do something fraudulent like making a nickel into a five dollar go
I would trade a hobo nickel FOR a ham sandwich! I have traded a lot of them for food and movie tickets. I had a surprise lay over in London and traded hobo nickels for a coke and a sandwich at the pub in Victoria station ☺️

@Brent hobonickel - nice work! I like Hobo nickels, personally. Especially the work of modern masters like Saburov.

i know im new and in NO WAY am i calling any member out but Brent Hobonickel used his talent to create something thats been around since 1913 when the Buffalo nickel that was introduced and that gave rise to the hobo nickel in America. I know there will always be people on both sides of this issue but ive seen a lot worse done to coins. remember when the price of copper went way up and people were melting down tons of Lincoln penny's? I wonder how many key dates, known and unknown error coins were melted down. you know with the Hobonickel i would bet most artist will only use culls, i hope they would anyway.

SOME people feel they have the right to tell OTHER people what they can or cannot do with their own property.

That is the real issue at the core of all of this.

Fun stuff Brent. Great work. I like that something can be done with these old worn nickels. Maybe those that see them will gain an interest in coin collecting.

I don't think anyone is telling others what to do. Just folks that have the right to voice an opinion. Nothing wrong with that.
