At a auction on Saturday night, I bought a Hobo nickel. A picture in a PDF file is attached. It is on a 1918 nickel. I seems like an original. I would like the board's opinion. You magnify the picture a lot. Thanks in advance for your opinions. King_George_Va
Many here would prefer to not download......I did. Pics too small to determine anything. Full sized pics (sans thumbnails) are most prefered........
It's a little crude, and obviously done on a well-circulated nickel. I don't think there's any real way to tell when it was done, but, judging by the circulation on the nickel, I wouldn't be surprised if it dated anywhere from the late 30's to early 60's. I don't collect these, so I have no idea what's appropriate to pay for one of these things.
Green18, Thanks for responding. I posted a reply the other day but do not see it. I was not logged in. You should be able to expand the picture till you can see nickel molecules (LOL).
Thanks Conder101, I thought OBNs were low quality because they were done with a knife on a train or around a camp fire. I looked up authentication techniques and I am convinced it is an original. I think I may be able to take a guess on the carver soon.
Grren18, Uploading is not the problem. It is getting a good picture. I had to zerox it to get the PDF. But it has millions of pixels.
Paul M. Thanks. There are techniques to help authenticate them but you are right you are never 100% sure. I was hoping for the 1920's since it was done on a worn 1918 coin.
If you can't turn off the flash, tape something opaque over it. What I meant when I said it wasn't high quality was that it wasn't done by a "good" artist in the field. Some of those hobos back in the 20's, 30's and 40's could do a quality job even with just that knife. Some of them were VERY nicely done.
Thanks Conder101. I'll try that. If it works I'll take a picture of all my Hobos. It definitely was done with a knife.
May I ask what camera you're using? I can't say I've ever seen a digital camera where the flash couldn't be turned off.
If a hobo isn't well done, I don't see the value in them. That coin looks like something a kid could do with a hot tool (one of those wood burning needle things?)
JoeCoinCollect, I think it is because I Xerox it in stead of photographing it. Evidently there is a screw loose in the camera operator.(LOL)
BooksB4Coins, HP 733 BTW, I learn better from making errors and listening to people than by reading books. Let me tell you making errors can be costly!
