Ever wonder how ancient coins are found? Well there is actually a science behind it. A fascinating series of articles on the different type of coin hoards was recently penned by Alan Walker, a famous numismatist and auction cataloguer. You can find them on the CoinsWeekly website, which is really a great website and newsletter that I'd encourage everyone to join. It's free. Good links @Carthago ! I enjoy the newsletter. I go for the cartoon first. This week's offering reminded me of another coin tat one by Celtic coin expert, Liz Cottam - http://www.celticcoins.com They have interesting coins and books.
@Carthago, is the newsletter supposed to arrive by email? When I went to subscribe, they said I was already subscribed (wonder how long ago that happened)...but I have never received any emails from them. Thanks for the links!
At the end he makes a joke about the United States' Memorandum of Understanding with Libya, restricting the import of rope made up until 1750. Everyone here knows we only have two or three more days to comment on MOU renewals with China and Ecuador, yes? The China one covers coins up to the Tang dynasty (907 AD) but the Ecuador one will cover coins for the first time. You will not be able to import "Colonial and republican period coins; medallions more than 50 years old...manuscripts more than 50 years old..." I have no clue what "republican period" means ... as far as I can tell Ecuador is still in their Republican period. Still, 50 years ago is 1968. It is surprising that there are people who consider medallions from the 1960s as cultural property worthy of emergency restrictions.
