An exemplar of Hellenistic portrait artistry. Hieron II was a general under the great Pyrrhus of Epirus and later became commander-in-chief of the Syracusan army after Pyrrhus left Sicily in 275 BC. Shortly thereafter, Hieron was able to defeat a mercenary army of Campanians that had been ravaging the Sicilian countryside under the former tyrant Agathokles. Hieron’s victory led to his being declared king by the grateful Syracusans. Hieron went on to ally himself with the Carthaginians against the Campanians, which led to conflict with Rome and, ultimately, defeat at the hands of the Roman consul Appius Claudius. Hieron II made peace with the Romans and remained loyal to Rome until his death in 215 BC.</i></p><p>[/QUOTE]</p><p><br /></p>
