My latest Judaean coin arrived today

It’s the half denomination (Hendin 1204) in the top right of the coin grouping.

Congrats @Deacon Ray on a 4th Antipas example! Each of your quartet is well above average for type. An Antipas is always a highly fitting inclusion in an ancient biblical coin collection. :)

What is the significance of the painting with the head?

Herod Antipas had John the Baptist beheaded.

Herod Antipas was the ruler who sanctioned the beheading of John the Baptist. Also of interest—the subjects in the painting are wearing costumes of the Renaissance period which was the standard method of depicting historical figures in paintings at the time. The figure of Antipas resembles Henry the VIII.

Thank you. I figured it was a Renaissance painting of a Biblical story, I didn't know which one.

    Also, liked the new coin!

Thank you, Sir! I’m always on the lookout for quality Antipas coins when they fall within my modest price allowance. Also—I may have mentioned this before but the Herod Archelaus coin in your avatar/icon is superb! :singing:

FWIW: A few years ago I sold 2 lesser quality Antipas examples that I owned, and then had to add some additional mammon to the sales proceeds in order to buy what is now my only Antipas:

It is a half-unit, Hendin 1200, from 20/21AD. Diameter is 21mm. Weight is 8.34 gr.

Superb grouping! Having even one Antipas in a collection is an accomplishment.

One of my all time favorite budget lot finds was this used and abused full denomination (dupondius) of Antipas in an unattributed lot
