Mice one Mikey. I forgot I have one of these as well: APOLLONIA PONTICA AR Drachm OBVERSE: Gorgoneian facing with snakes for hair and a protruding tongue REVERSE: An anchor flanked by letter A and a crayfish, which represents the minting city of Apollonia, the major fifth century BC Greek colony on the west coast of the Black Sea, modern Sozopol in Bulgaria Struck at Apollonia 450-400 BC 3.13g, 14-15mm BMC IX, Black Sea 150-151
It's a shame. Without getting into the politics of it all, what the heck are they thinking (or not thinking). These are historical. Destroying the things they are does not erase the history, just makes it harder for future generations to study the history of the area.
Hey on the upside is with no more antiquities to risk ruining we can start a large scale airiel bombardment of the area unimpeded. ....ugh I mean help them appreciate what remains and help them come to embrace freedom.
Sweet!! => that's a very cool effort, iamtiberius (great bunch of Apollonia Pontica examples!) ... I only have this one humble example ... ... funny how much they all vary, eh? (I sent my example to David Sear, for there are apparently a whole lotta fakes runnin' about) As Bing would say => "A fool and his money are soon parted" for the cost of the California road-trip was basically the same as I spent on the coin!! (however, I needed to know if I'd been had, or if it was legit) ... it got the a-okay
=> That's right, Cletus-Bing => go be a dear and fetch Mama a bucket o' mud-bugs!! ... ooops, it's my dinner time
Terrific assortment 'Tiberius'....It looks like you may have been inspired by JA's work----he always puts together beautiful and impressive collages.
