Please look for that -- I've not seen anything said by Mr. Guth to that effect. FYI, if you look at the number to the right of the decimal place in the coin number (in this case 92) that'll tell you that it was "altered surfaces" in PCGS body-bag-eese....Mike
i dont know if it was written some place but i believe that i had a conversation along those lines with Ron
What angers me in a kind of deep, dark way is how this seller has 8000+ ratings at 99.7% since 2002 and this is what we get. It's a $11,000 coin. The guy is going to take a few minutes to examine it and he says in the text that he just can't figure out why it was not graded. Boy, I guess I can trust his grading descriptions for the $100 "original" coins then!
They have been doing it or maybe 6 months, at a cost of $100 per coin. What started DECEMBER 1st, not January 1st was that all genuine coins that couldn't be slabbed would be put in a GENUINE slab for the regular grading fee that you paid and not returned in a bodybag. And it was apparently against the eBay rules as they have pulled the auction. I checked the USPS site for insurance rates and you can't insure regular, Priority or Express mail for more than $5,000, and $5,000 in insurance for regular or Priority costs $49.25 $5,000 insurance for Express mail is $13.98 Registered mail can be insured to $25,000 and $12K in coverage costs $26.50
CamaroDMD is correct, the new service started Dec 1st. On the new submission forms you will have the option of opt out, but it will be the normal cost of grading a coin. The labels will be a normal and on the obverse will say "PCGS Genuine" below the date, mint mark and denomination designations, with no-grade codes 91-98 except 96. The Reverse will have GENUINE NOT GRADABLE on it. They still will not slab a coin that has been holed and plugged, counterfeited or have active PVC contamination. "Paraphrased from the Dec 8th, 2008 Coin World article on pg 10." Dave
They started before November, i bought a PCGS genuine from Heritage in October, the slab is same as regular slab.
Found this on another forum, from Don Willis, President of PCGS: Due to popular demand we are making a couple changes to our Genuine program. In addition to the previous no grade codes we will now holder 'Holed & Plugged', and 'Rim Filed' coins. Since both of these impairments can be very difficult to recognize we will print the no grade reason on the front of the insert (only for these two no grades). We are also creating a new no grade code for 'Peeling Lamination'. These will not be holdered as we consider them to be active. Also, note that 'Holed' coins will be holdered as code 98 - damaged. Here is a recap of our no grade codes, print status as well as holder status. Code/ Description / Printed Description / Holder 82 Filed Rims / Yes / Yes 83 Peeling Lamination / No / No 84 Holed and Plugged / Yes / Yes 90 Not Genuine / No / No 91 Questionable Color / No / Yes 92 Cleaned / No / Yes 93 Planchet Flaw / No / Yes 94 Altered Surface / No / Yes 95 Scratch or Rim Nick / No / Yes 97 Environmental Damage / No / Yes 98 Damage or Tooling / No / Yes 99 PVC Residue / No / No btw - I've seen a few posts wondering what code 80 means. That was the code used for the old Genuine program. We are no longer holdering coins as code 80. Mike - the following is the press release I mentioned. Thought it was from Guth but it was right at the time Willis took his place. Anyway, reading it closer the slab in this thread matches. Coulda swore they were gonna change the color though. Wrong on that.
