Thanks Mark. It's true that you can find nice proofs in various places like auctions, the internet, or from other dealers and collectors. But it is really hard to find beautifully toned proofs - and when you do, they are quite pricey due to their extremely attractive eye appeal. Demand seems to be very high for these types of proofs, and when they are in demand, the cost of obtaining them goes waaay up!

I too love looking at pieces like these, and I'm very happy to share them with all of you as well!

    Charmy,

While I agree that many of the proof IHC's available on the market are rather drab, I remember when Anaconda was around, they literally sold hundreds of spectacular toned proof IHC's. Are they really that hard to find? I only own one and don't actively collect them, but in my past experience, I always thought that finding an attractive toned proof IHC was rather easy compared to most series.

IMO, originally toned proofs with gorgeous colorful toning are hard to find. Many have been artificially toned and the TPG's have been declining to slab most toned coins these days, proofs or business strikes so it's harder to get them certified now. I have seen Anaconda's proofs in the past but I don't see that they have many for sale now. Great Toning also used to have some, but again, they seem to have dried up.

So whenever I do find proofs that look like this, I try to buy them, though as I mentioned, it's getting tougher since the prices seem to keep rising to obtain them.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I'll repeat my question since it seems to have gotten lost - the first two look cameo. Are they, or is it just the picture? How rare are cameo Indian proofs? Why are these not designated cameo?

    Jason,

I can't answer the question about Charmy's coins, but I can assure you that IHC's are given the CAMEO designation when it is warranted. Here is a link to the CAMEO proof IHC I bought from Anaconda years ago.

I don't know the series well enough to discuss the overall rarity of CAMEO or the affect it has on the prices, but it is rare on for the date of my coin as can be seen by the description written by Heritage when it was in their auction.

Rare Cameo Proof 1897 Indian Cent, PR66

1897 1C PR66 Red and Brown Cameo NGC.</I> While not a particularly scarce coin as a proof, cameo examples of this date are notably rare with this single example being the only Cameo or Ultra Cameo certified by NGC (1/05). PCGS, on the other hand, has graded seven Cameo coins and only one Deep Cameo. This is a splendid proof that has the orange-peel finish in the fields that is often seen on proofs from the 1880s and 1890s. Each side displays lovely iridescent orange, red, violet, and lemon-yellow coloration that is truly a wonder to behold. The devices are noticeably frosted and provide ample contrast on each side.(#82380) (Registry values: P1) (#82380)

    Hope this helps!

Cameo proofs are even harder to come by and bring a much higher premium, but for some reason the TPG's are very reluctant to give out cameo designations on Indian cents. NGC does give cameo designations on Indian cent proofs but I don't know if I've seen PCGS designate any Indian cents as cameo.

Physics, I agree that the first two coins look very cameo and feel that they should have a cameo designation, but your guess is as good as mine as to why they weren't so designated.

I think the Brown 1897 is absolutely beautiful. If these are some of your "keepers" do you ever bring a few along to shows? It would be nice to see some of them at Baltimore, for instance.:)

Charmy is the pied piper of CT. She could get you to drool over slugs from electrical boxes, she's got such nice stuff.

I must admit that I never wanted a proof indian of a MPL until I saw Charmy post some of hers.
