Henry VIII Ireland Groat

    As nice as it would be to have a portrait Henry VIII, I did pick up this Groat from a fellow collector on the pcgs boards at a good price a few weeks back.

    This was driving me crazy until I realized you showed the obverse at the right side.

    Very nice Mat. I find myself being drawn to these hammered coins. I would not picking up some of them that correspond to characters in Shakespeare's plays. The Richard III would be tough though.

    I find the writing is totally oblique until you start picking out the letters, remembering the roman lettering looks odd also. Turning the coin helps. Then it gets clear(er). As with the rest of the modern world, coins kept the same type for many centuries then changed completely.

    very cool early modern/medieval coin! they still have the harp on the coins of ireland don't they? is this one of the first to have it? how far back does it go on coinage?
