As nice as it would be to have a portrait Henry VIII, I did pick up this Groat from a fellow collector on the pcgs boards at a good price a few weeks back. IRELAND, Henry VIII (1509-1547) AR Groat O:hЄnRIC VIII : DI GR RЄX : ΛnGLIЄ, Crowned royal arms over long cross fourchée. R: FRΛnCIЄ : ЄT : hIBЄRnIЄ : RЄX Crowned harp dividing the crowned initials H & R London Mint, Struck 1543 25mm 2.47g SCBI 22 (Copenhagen), -; SCBC 6480
Very nice Mat. I find myself being drawn to these hammered coins. I would not picking up some of them that correspond to characters in Shakespeare's plays. The Richard III would be tough though.
I find the writing is totally oblique until you start picking out the letters, remembering the roman lettering looks odd also. Turning the coin helps. Then it gets clear(er). As with the rest of the modern world, coins kept the same type for many centuries then changed completely.
very cool early modern/medieval coin! they still have the harp on the coins of ireland don't they? is this one of the first to have it? how far back does it go on coinage?
