This is from a 50c 72S PR. I have never seen anything like this on a proof Kennedy half dollar before. I thought a possible doubled die with some non typical looking doubling until I saw the C of AMERICA. I am not sure what to think...does anyone have any ideas?

    Looks like MD.

Definitely some doubling going on. I'm more inclined to think the C just took a very light hit.

Here is another photo of the C in AMERICA...I don't think it is from a hit.

Looking at that photo, I agree. I don't know. It almost looks like a combination of the doubling(which looks like class II) and some MD that's high up on the devices. I've seen Lincoln proofs with very high MD like this.

On the "C", if it's not a hit, then I don't know what it is, but I do know that it's not doubling.

Just to be clear, I don't think that primary demarcation on the C is doubling either, but I do believe that I see evidence at the top of the C of the doubling that we see elsewhere on the coin.

I see notching on the ERI, but not detecting anything on the C. Looks like a doubled die judging by the nice splits on the first part of AMERICA.

    That's what I would say.

It is a doubled die based upon the notches. The inner portion of the C shows machine doubling. You can have both on the same coin. In any case it is definitely a doubled die.

Thank you everyone for your input. I am still trying to figure out what caused the lumpy appearance...maybe a class II strike thru an accumulation of grease and metal dust, or maybe MDD thru grease? What do you think?

I thought about grease too, and I think that's a distinct possibility. Possibly all three things going on with this one, but at least it's a doubled die.:)

Just to follow up...I sent this to James Wiles he said "DDR is too minor to list".

I still like it. Hate it isn't getting listed.

That's true. I'll look for it if I come along any '72-S Proofs.
