There is a difference on how the people in Taiwan count as independence day versus from people in America count as independence day. People in Taiwan are taught 10/10, 1911 as equivalent to July 4, 1776. Although 10/10, 1911 is the day people in China started the revolution, and the government was not established until 1/1, 1912, people in Taiwan have always been taught 10/10, 1911 as indenpence day.

Althought Independence was declared on 7/4/1776. George Washington didn't become president until 1789. So an argument could be made on what day is USA really became government too?

Thanks ML94539! I'm not Chinese but have lived here on and off for ten years beginning in 1984. Suggest Lies My Teachers Told Me as good intro to alternative histories. Hard to fix dates and lines can shift for when a country began. I once asked a Chinese friend: At what point in a Chinese wedding can you say they are married. He replied: There is no one point! I have asked many and have never gotten an answer of at what point you can say the couple is married. October 10 of 1911 is the celebration date for independence here. Period. As a new comer to this forum--this being my first week--I was surprised by this type of response and disrespect for another country's view of their independence. The student movements of August 1911 can easily be seen as the beginnings of what shortly became the Republic. Thanks for the US history.. Weifin in Taipei
