As other have said: the OP coin is NOT GENUINE. It is actually a poorly made fake - the devices and positioning on both Obverse and Reverse do not match the only dies known for this year (JR-1). Besides that, the overall impression of the bust is not correct. Genuine 1809 dimes are scarce and highly sought after. Rarity 3+ is probably close. Some even say that it is a scarce as the 1822 dime. There is heavy collector demand for the date, and this provides an incentive to the unscrupulous to try to deceive unwary collectors.
Did they ever pull the ops coin . Nothing like having a real example to look at and compare . The stars are all positioned wrong . the loop in the 8 is wrong .
Hello all, I just joined this forum. I've been searching for an 1809 dime and found this thread on the subject and very informative to say the least. They don't come up often on eBay but this one ended a few weeks ago. Any thoughts on condition? The container looks like it has some age. And it seems to fit the pictured descriptions http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAP...fUu0Vcron0/Xs=&viewitem=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
I can't speak to the coin, but it always makes me suspicious when the owner can't even put a right-side up image as the primary. At least he put large ones in the body.
I saw that coin come and go on ebay....500$ is not a bad price I suppose but the coin does have some issues. It appears to have upper VF to XF details. The coin appears to have spent some time in the ground and then subsequently cleaned. Definitely some corrosion in places, and what looks to be like a wire brush attack on the reverse! The coin may have brought more money in a better economy, most of the people buying coins right now have money and are willing to spend more for a problem free example.
