I am still learning when it comes to grading so I wanted to see how I did. I managed to pick this 38 D up in a group of halves and quarters I recently bought. This is actually the second 38 D I've got this way! I was thinking it is a F-12. Here are some pictures I took.

Well atleast I wasn't too far off. Any particular areas of wear to look for in coming to that conclusion?

It looks like a good strong die strike. But I think the nicks on the OBV & Rev hurts it grading F.

I don't often disagree with Larry, but VG seems a little tough to me. I agree with your F-12.

I'm hard pressed to find an appreciable difference between VG10 and F12 on PCGS Photograde (which every new collector should bookmark), and yours seems to fit the bill for either of those grades. I'm a bit concerned about the surfaces, as it has the "once gently cleaned" look to it.

I appreciate the feed back gentlemen. So VG10 to F12 range, seems there's some mixed opinions. I'm glad I was about on target. I guess I'm learning something lol. I hope it wasn't cleaned and in hand I didn't see anything that made me think it was. But I'm certainly no expert. If it was, would it be an old clean? Anything in particular that points to that on the coins surface that I should look out for in the future? I don't mean to ask a bunch of questions I'm just trying to learn.

    doug444 STAMPS and POSTCARDS too!

Bold date, strong rims, and pleasing appearance = fine plus, but certainly not very fine.

The central obverse has a slight look of being a little lighter than the rest of the obverse. I may be totally wrong on this, and it could simply be a lighting issue with the photo, but it was something that caught my eye. If it had been cleaned, it was a long time ago, and it was not by any means a harsh cleaning.

It is these nicks that take away how I 1938-D Walker OBV with nicks.JPG 1938-D Walker REV with nicks.JPG would find the grade only VG.

No matter the grade IMO the walking liberty is the finest looking obverse our government ever produced!

Yes, I realize that, and was why I placed the little winky thing at the end. Regardless, both are certainly lovely designs, infinitely more pleasing than the god-awful crap we're saddled with on today's circulating coins.

Anyway, be it to either clarify or inform....
