I am far from a coinage expert, but from what I can see:

    1. All lettering appear to be raised. Therefore, it cannot be a squeeze job.
    2. The dime was struck first. Its details have been flattened by the cent strike. Of this, I am virtually positive.
    3. It appears to me that there is not enough metal to fill the dies for the cent strike. This seems almost obvious when compared to the eBay example. If nothing else, there are almost no rims on the coin

I r4ealize that the odds are remote, but what about a foreign planchet struck as a dime and then a cent? One quick was to check this would be to weigh it -on an accurate scale. Take it to a jewer if you do not have anything available to weigh it.

What I see is a dime that was struck first, then the cent. All detail is raised. It is not a squeeze job. This error might be legitimate. I would get it authenticated. If it is a fake, I would be interested in knowing how it was done.

I'm no expert either, but if the dime was first struck, I'd love to know just how that dime sized rim, which is plainly visible on the first pic, survived another strike which, if this is correct, formed another rim the size of a cent planchet without flattening the dime rim. Seems a bit hard to swallow.

Mike Diamond , please report to this post. My impression is that it's real. Mike is an expert and should comment soon.

I think it is real. Will wait to see what Mike says but I've seen a few of these in person at the local shop and this one looks good.
I would send it to NGC or PCGS if I were you--if it gets graded, and I see no reason why it wouldn't, the value would be a few hundred. Since there is a clear date on both sides I can see the value being quite a bit.

I am not a coin expert in the least, but if you mean reeded as in the ridges on the edges of it, yes it definetly does.

Also, is there some sort of item that I should clean this piece with?

Absolutely do not clean this! If it is real, cleaning it will obliterate the value.

I second that -- Do NOT clean. Cleaning will greatly diminish the sale value.

And yes, reeding is the lines on the edge that a dime has and cents don't.

After all the interesting, informative posts to this thread please don't do anything to the coin but get it graded by NGC or PCGS. That'll solve the dispute. IMO, it looks real. But I am not an expert in any respect but it's just a gut feeling. I've been wrong before.

Before Mike chimes in with his opinion I want to go on record as saying this coin is real. And one heck of a thing to find layig on the floor in a store!

Real coin, I have seen several of these pieces and they are amongst my favorite. One of my error dealers has one for sale with a hefty price tag in an old anacs MS64 Holder for $1,100

I'd say the only way to be certain is to spend the cash to have it certified

I did this ask a kid many many years ago...first we put two coins together inside coke bottle tops and put the squeeze on em with my Dad's bench vice... even back then a cheater bar worked wonders for tourque.

I may be wrong but that is what it looks like to me...

You are wrong. When you squeeze them together, the letting is mirrored and indented. This letter is not.

D'oh! This is the US Coins Forum not the Error Forum. Mike probably doesn't even know about this thread.

As to who he is, Mike Diamond is the current president of Coneca, ( http://www.conecaonline.org/ ) an error and variety club. He knows his stuff.

sorry, I am new to this forum, and I wasn't sure where to place it. I did know that it was a U.S. Coin.
