I received this great coin mixed in with an ancient coin lot that I recently purchased and am having trouble fully attributing it. I'd appreciate any input that can help learn more about it. Here's what I have so far: 2 Granna issued under the rule of Charles II of Spain. Obverse Legend: CAROLUS II D G REX, G in right field Reverse Legend: SICILIAE ET HEIRUSA (I think) 21 mm, 8.5 g, Copper Thanks!
Archicard, Cool copper. I can send you some good links that will help with attribution and positive I.D., however, I am on vacation, away from my laptop and won't be able to help right away. If you can sit tight for a few days I will see if I can come up with anything.
For a while Spain did control southern Italy (Kingdom of the Two Sicilies) including both Naples and Syracuse on the island itself
Carolus the Second Naples 1674- 1700 Naples- Grano - copper 1677 RARE - 1678/79/80 very popular. Pannuti Riccio 52 MIR 308 Corpus Nummorum Italicorum 12
Thank you Vannilo, this gives me a chance to learn more about it. Do you know the significance of the G in the right field?
Letters that are in the left field of the bust are the initial of the mintmaster name. ( In your coin ACA, that is Antonio Caputo 1679-1682) About the letters on the right (known coins with the following letters:A;B;C;E;F;G;H;I;L;M;N;P) it is not clear what they means. Some believe they identify a specific officier of the mint, other the different mint workshops. Regards. vannilo
