I understand this is not a coin, but I am guessing it is medieval, and it was unearthed along with couple of roman coins. In case I am out of line, I kindly ask the moderator to move the thread where he finds appropriate. When I got it, it was black encrustation double its size and I thought there was a coin underneath I am puzzled by the coat of arms and cannot read the writting in full. I am not sure about the material either, so if you have any ideas, I would love to hear them. Thanks!
I am searching, thanks... It looks most like scottish coa, but not the shield. Shield has four fields and the top right field has a fish!? Anyway, it was found at a place, where british uniform(except 20th century), was not likely to be found
Thanks Pishpash, but I only really need to ID the coat of arms and I have greater trust in general knowledge of the folks here.
Honi soit qui mal y pense That's the "order of the garter" motto. Evil be to the one who thinks evil. Looks to be some order of the garter button. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honi_soit_qui_mal_y_pense
It's also the coat of arms of the Prince of Wales. I've been telling my wife for years that my Ph.D. in medieval studies would pay off some day. She's still waiting.
@old49er Thats the button! Based on that information, it is probably WWI era button of some british military formation
Well being of Welsh blood lines you would of thought I would of nailed it.......must of been the Irish in me that threw off the chase. Cheers glad you got an answer .
Teamwork always brings results.... This time its bullseye. I ll find the uniform now as well. I'm sure Thanks Paddy54
This was a secondary uniform button on general service uniforms of british army. The "kings crown" with the lion over it indicates its general age - post victorian period. Once again, my gratitude to anyone who helped on this"project".
