I have this AE4 14 mm., 1.7 gm., with a radiate (?) bust on the obverse, and what may be described as a 'West Coast Surfer' on the obverse. Now I am pretty sure that surfers didn't make it onto Roman coins, so what do I have here? Can anyone help me out here, please?
This is out of my comfort zone but I think it is a barbarous radiate of Tetricus or Tetricus II. The reverse looks like Sol (in his classic West Coast Surfer pose) . Some info about barbarous radiates: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=41614.0 http://augustusmath.hypermart.net/BarbarousRadiates.html
Ha Ha! - I don't know where that is, Steve, but 50 (plus) years ago the girls waited on the beach for us, and we did the surfing. (Back to the coin?)
@>TIF - Thank-you for pointing me to those references. Based on what I took in from a quick read, (more tomorrow - close to my bed-time now), I would say that you have 'nailed' it. Thank-you, again.
@T7 I also belong to the 7 CT group, as far as user name. Well .. scarce coin. And.. Have a calm, nice and surfing sleep.
Yes, TIF, and I say that I haven't changed at all. (P.S. for those that know such things - with the help of 'Pete Byers' I made that board and the first 18 inches is solid 'plaster' for 'big wave' riding. With that board, I caught up with Robert and Mike at Piha (NZ) in 1966 when they were filming 'The Endless Summer' movie.) 'Bombs' to get there, 'Beer' to drink there, and 'Beach Bunnies' for company. Those were the days allright.
Thank-you, YOC. I was wondering 'I' or 'II'. I am happy with Tetricus II / Sol, Barbarous Imitation, c.275-285 A.D.
