D'oh!!! Consider this post a "Homer Simpson" moment for me. It finally occurred to me that I could try to Google the info I wanted instead of bothering others to do what I should have done. I find it annoying that many people don't even try to do research before asking the people in here for an answer. I almost fell into that category. :shame: Oh, and the answer is at the bottom. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm trying to flesh out my inventory of Braided Hair Large Cents. I've got Grellman's book, The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents 1840-1857. So I immediately ran into my first problem. The Red Book lists an 1839 dated coin in this category (Braided Hair/1839-1857) as well as several 1839 dated coins in the previous category (Matron Head Modified/1835-1839/The"Young Head"). The Grellman book, as seen by the title, doesn't include an 1839 dated coin as part of the Braided Hair Large Cents set. Somewhere in the past I had found the description of the 1839 Braided Hair as "Petite Head, Type of 1840". Bottom Line: Is there a Newcomb Number for the 1839 Braided Hair Large Cent? If so, what is it? ANSWER: N-8 From now on I promise to do my own research before asking a question in here. :angelic:
