It (CAC's customary buying policy) is still far better than the guarantee of the TPGs IMHO. Technically, and this is worth mentioning, there is no CAC guarantee however. They can politely tell you "no" although to my knowledge this has never happened in practice.
Hmmm, is CAC not a coin dealer ? What's more are they not a very respected coin dealer ? But yet their offer of what they would pay doesn't count ? As is so often claimed the mere fact of a CAC sticker being on a coin increases the value of that coin. Is this not true ? Seems to me I can recall you personally voicing that opinion. So CAC's opinion of what a coin is worth matters to you, in some cases, but not in other cases - is that an accurate statement, or not ? I was trying to make a point with my comment, nothing more. The point is people are paying too much for these coins. And the fact that CAC, a very respected coin dealer and market maker, would never offer a fraction of what was paid for that coin, well, in my opinion that should reinforce that point. And yet I'm the one out of touch with the coin market It seems to me that what you call the "coin market" is showing a bit of irrational exuberance.
Well you assume CAC would not make a strong offer. We dont know what their offer was. My point is , if i had a bunch of error coins, i would take them to a dealer that specializes in errors. Just like if i had toned coins i would take them to a toned dealer. Would you take your gold ducats to a dealer that specializes in lincoln cents? You know that all dealers value certain coins differently, so stating a coin is overvalued because one dealer presumably would not offer much doesnt mean much. i know you think these coins can easily be replicated , but its just not true.
I looks real to me...the way the colors flow through the surface of the coin...It is a very nice Merc...I will admit I have NOT seen one with so many dark colors...Do I think it could be AT? Yeah...but not in this case. Great coin...I wonder what the final price will be.
They're bidding with their hearts, not their heads, on pretty colors; of course it's irrational... EDIT: That doesn't mean someone with experience in that market can't reasonably predict where that bidding will go.
Amazing! Your instincts and hunch served you well! Have you ever broken out an early US Mint Set and submitted the individual coins for grading, in anticipation of dramatically increasing the value over the original set price. (Amt. pd. divided by 5-number of coins in the set)?
This is the saddest testament of the current coin market I have read in a long time. Most dealers just care what profit they can flip a coin for to the next person. Labels over coins. Money over morals. Good for you for turning a profit - sad for the hobby in that dealers just pass around coins like widgets and surrogate forms of currency. The idea of a "sight unseen" transaction 20 years ago would have had most collectors laughing. Today, all is good so long as the plastic says it is okay.
Actually the concept is not new, and PCGS pushed and promoted sight unseen market makers for its product during its early years of operation. The idea of greed and plastic speculation was well established and there are parallels between today's market and that of 1990. It resulted in a huge crash/market correction. I don't think we are as screwed 1990, but things could go south if market participants continue to act in this manner.
Have you never had multiple dealers make offers that were far apart before? One dealer doesn't represent the entire market. I bet Legend would pay more than PCGS guide (and higher than CAC bid) for it even though it would be considered a widget without the toning. And don't fool yourself - CAC market grades just like the TPGs and I think a little color will help push up a borderline coin IMO.
I have a question. Dose anyone have an example of a coin with AT, and had it for more than 20 years. How has it held up? is the example exactly the same? Or?
Not necessarily in all instances. I can even see a green bean hurting a coin if it looks high end and like it might go gold, but only green beans at CAC as speculators sometimes pay much more for gold bean candidates. Gold stickered coins sell for premiums that exceed what I feel the increased quality is worth in many instances.
How many have gone south? With certain Kennedys. I like to stay with Brilliant and Have Lustre. The lustre is what I count. If I Keep, Buy,or Pick a coin.
I am moving into a knew place. If any can help. I want to capture a coin with what I appreciate it for. Gonna build a studio. I also wanna b a professional Fisherman But, hey I have another 5 years.
