I am trying to get better at sorting through coins on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/191593365459?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT http://www.ebay.com/itm/371302563449?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT http://www.ebay.com/itm/331527255097?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT http://www.ebay.com/itm/151709856263?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT These are all buy it now and have edge view holders. Some seem a little high unless they are higher 64s. What are your thoughts? What would you pay for each?
I'll go out on a limb and say that you can't actually tell which is best from the photos provided. To distinguish a better from a worse 64, you'd almost have to examine them all in hand. Coin A could look much better than coin B on the basis of visible hits, but when you turn them under a light, coin B's luster would knock coin A out of the running immediately. Or not, but you won't be able to tell from photos. BTW, for those of us who don't care to start clicking through links without having some idea of what we'll be seeing, these are all MS64 St. Gaudens pieces, varying dates. One small, non-grade-related point: when I finally get around to buying a St. Gaudens type piece, I'll probably look for one with a mint mark, just because of the unusual above-the-date placement.
