Is there any other service out there like Sklow? Or a dealer who has a significant focus on numismatic literature?
Remy Bourne, but I am not sure if he is still in business. and then there is Charles Davis. and Kolbe & Fanning. To the OP: sorry for hijacking this thread.
Thanks Frank, And I don't think this is hijacking at all. We are helping him to build his library by showing him who to buy from if he doesn't already know!
For what it's worth the coinbooks.org(?) usually has advertisements about coin books being auctioned as well as other interesting numismatic articles.
From the E-Sylum: August 23, 2015 CHARLES DAVIS SALE CLOSES SEPTEMBER 12, 2015 Charlie Davis forwarded this announcement for his next numismatic literature sale, which closes September 12, 2015. Thanks. -Editor Our next auction of numismatic literature, with a closing date of September 12, will posted on our www.Numisbook.com site shortly, and catalogues will be mailed this coming week. Highlights include Crosby’s Early Coins of America, unbound in its original 11 wrappers - the only such copy I can find being offered in at least 35 years (For the Crosby/Wester copy, all sections were laid into Part 1 only wrappers). We also offer the Charles Horning collection of 130 Bangs catalogues and about 20 early plated American catalogues including many of the tough Chapmans - Henderson, Taylor-Windle, Bascomb & Brown, Alvord, Jenks, Sleicher, and two Stickneys. A 75 lot section of large cents is highlighted by Howard Newcomb’s annotated copy of his work of the Cents of 1816-1857 establishing that the book was in fact published before his death.
Wow thank you for all the replies! I'll steer clear of Flynn's work. I hadn't heard them really mentioned before so had never checked into them in the first place. I did know of a few of the numi book sellers you mentioned. I didn't catch that it was Sklows last auction however, that's too bad, the catalog had many good lots and looked like a good auction to keep an eye on. I have purchased several things from KF at auction and directly. I'm interested in a Heritage CSNS 2009 Catalog featuring the Lemus pattern collection, since we are on the subject of old catalogs... I haven't been searching for too long but as of yet I have not found one. Soooooo if anyone here has an idea where I could find one if be grateful. Any other pattern rich catalog or reference as well.
Flynn's books are usually well written and a good source for general info on a particular series. While there may be some mistakes and oversights what reference doesn't have them? I have most if not all of his books and find them informative. If you want in depth info then search out those books. In his defense, and he needs none, he his willing to write and share the info, how many of us have written a book,an article for a magazine or a weekly, something besides a few sentences on this or any other forum. Instead of ridiculing him and his efforts, inform him on what you might think is incorrect info.
Just from what I know in the Seated Series, he wishes to use the people's work who have put in the hours on the series, and the years studying to find the knowledge that they have. Why should they just give it to Kevin and let him profit off it? Especially when he is known to give you little credit and it be full of errors and flat out wrong information? Maybe if he wanted to truly write good books he would study up on it, befriend the industry leaders in those series instead of undermining them and attempting to use their work for his financial gain. So if he is being stonewalled in the seated series, what useful information could he possibly bring to the table? Is he even aware that Bowers is fixing to publish a book on the whole series this fall? Why the need for two new books, especially from someone who hasnt put in the time to acquire the right information? To top that off, how can he possibly know the nuances for the series if he doesnt even collect most of the ones he is writing about? I agree that maybe he has gathered some useful information and put into one spot, but very little of the research has been done by himself, hes just piggy-backing off of other folks. Besides, the 'RedBook' series now covers almost every series if you are looking for general information, and the new Deluxe Addition is quite thorough itself. Ill reinforce this another way, what book of Flynns is considered the industry standard reference on any series that he has wrote a book about? I never see him mentioned when people seriously ask for a good reference book, and that should tell you what the hobby really thinks of his works
I will withhold any further comments about Mr. Flynn, since he does not like my opinions. and has said so
