Clavdius, do you have Guido Bruck's Late Roman Bronze Coinage, An attribution guide for poorly preserved coins? If you're a masochist like me and like to identify worn LRB's, this book is a must-have. Here's the Amazon link, used copies starting at 19 bucks.

I was going through a bag of pretty rough LRB's myself today and came across this little mystery...

I could clearly see that this was a SPES type - I've seen them issued by Constantius II, but I could not make out the obverse legend other than to say it was not Constantius II.
Clavdius, do you have Guido Bruck's Late Roman Bronze Coinage, An attribution guide for poorly preserved coins? I was going through a bag of pretty rough LRB's myself today and came across this little mystery... I could clearly see that this was a SPES type - I've seen them issued by Constantius II, but I could not make out the obverse legend other than to say it was not Constantius II. Also, the mint mark on the reverse is off-flan. I looked up the Spes types in Bruck. Here's how it's laid out... This tells me the type was also issued by Julian II, and the reverse field mark on my coin corresponds to Cyzicus mint, and once I know that, I also get the complete obverse inscription as Cyzicus used only one. It's a book worth having, and it comes pretty cheap as far as numismatic texts go.
