I like a good helmet coin and this one is very beautiful, from the last CNG auction. KINGS of MACEDON. Philip V. 221-179 BC. AR Tetrobol (14.5mm, 2.38 g, 9h). Pella or Amphipolis mint; Zoilos, magistrate. Struck circa 184-179 BC. Macedonian shield; on boss, MA-KE above and below club / Macedonian helmet; two monograms across central field, ZΩ (mintmaster) monogram and star flanking cheek guards. Touratsoglou, Coin, pl. 5, 9; Liampi, Schild M39a; SNG Copenhagen 1285. VF, toned. Post your helmet coins!
That is a beautiful coin for a great price. I'm surprised it went for anywhere near CNG's estimate. They seem to be wildly low most of the time. Unfortunately, I don't have any helmet coins to show... yet.
It's gorgeous! Here's an odd-looking helmet: SICILY, Himera 430-420 BCE AR litra, 11 x 12 mm, 0.68 gm Obv: bearded and helmeted head right Rev: Corinthian helmet right Ref: SNG Lloyd 1029 from Ira & Larry Goldberg, Pre Long Beach Auction September 2013, part of a mixed lot. ex CNG Sale XXV, lot 71, 3/24/93 ex CNA II, lot 31

Nice!! => JBG, that sweet OP-score was one of the coins that was on my coin-radar (I'm totally jealous that you scored that beauty) Yah, but I love it when good guys end-up scoring my coin-targets (at least it went to a great coin-home) Congrats, brother Ummm? ... sorry, did somebody mention helmets? Military themes are my primary focus in coin collecting and I have a few to share from my ancients: Diodotus Tryphon, Selecuid Kingdom, 142-138 BC AE18, 5.4g; 2h; Antioch Obv.: Diademed head left Rev.: BΑΣΙΛΕΩS TPYΦANO AYTOKPATOPOS; Legend to left and right of spiked Macedonian helmet left ornamented with ibex-horn; monogram ΙΛΣ in left field I have a super cool Carthiginian coin featuring a helmet but I can't post it now because I'm on my tablet.
Very nice Makedonon! That is on my target list now... All the coin helmets I have are on a head, except for this small one from Carthage's traveling Military Mint during the 2nd Punic War... Carthage AE13, 2.12g 1/4 Calco 218-209 BCE Second Punic War Mint Traveling with Carthaginian Army in Southern Celtiberia Tanit / Helmet
JB, Great idea for a thread, I've always been fascinated by helmets and am starting to acquire helmeted coins as a theme. This Mesembrian Diobol is actually a win from my first foray into auctions. I had been lurking and looking around for one that would have a lot of detail, and found it. Mesembria, 4th century BC, AR diobol, 11mm, 1.17 grams Obverse: Crested helmet facing forward. Reverse: META inside of four spoked wheel SNG BM 268-71 This next helmet is not exactly a coin, in fact it is a U.S. Model 1917 with Fall of 1918 camouflage. This was one of my collecting interests when I was much younger. However, just for style and design, I prefer the great examples posted by others on this thread.
Heidy-Ho neighbors! I forgot I had one of @JBGood Philip V. I did not put "Helmet" in the file name, so my search did not bring it up. I THOUGHT his looks awfully familiar! Makedon Amphipolis Philip V - Perseus - lost empire to Romans - helmet Tetrobol Obv-Rev.JPG @Ancientnoob is responsible for this extravagance...
Believe me, Roma has her right foot on a helmet... Nero, Dupondius minted in Rome in 65 AD NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER PM TR P IMP PP, Radiate head of Nero right ROMA in ex, SC in field, Roma seated left holding wreath and parazonium, , right foot on a helmet 13.06 gr Ref : RCV #1966, Cohen #280 Q
