The coin is a Liberty Head Nickel, commonly called a V nickel for obvious reasons. Made from 1883 to 1912, they achieved notoriety for two things...in 1883 they first made the coins without a "cent" designation and popular legend has it that con men gold plated them and passed them off as 5-dollar gold pieces. They changed the design quickly to add cents. Also the 1913 V nickel is famous as one of the most expensive American coins since they were not issued in 1913 and they appear to have been made illegally by a mint employee. Where did you get yours?

Yes. Real. Quite common in that grade. These saw heavy circulation well into the 20th century, so they're often seen like this.

Per Numismedia, a 1904 Liberty nickel in Good (G4) grade (the lowest listed) is worth about $3. Your coin, however, is not even G4. It's more like somewhere between the strong end of Fair (FR2) and the weaker end of About Good (AG3).

As such, it's worth a dollar at most; probably a bit less.

But yes, it is a genuine 111-year-old US nickel five-cent piece.

You won't get rich off it, but enjoy its history.

If it's fake it fooled this economy for a long time given that degree of circulation wear.

Remind me to get an ice cream truck and drive it up and down the block in your neighborhood. Maybe somebody will decide to spend some other 111-year-old coins, like maybe a $10 or $20 gold piece or two. LOL

(I'll happily give 'em change in modern quarters.)
