To help a new collector, I always suggest to buy the book before you buy the coin. Books are expensive. I have over $4,000 invested in books to help grade, authenticate and buys coins for my collection. If you want to study die characteristics for Morgan and Peace silver dollars before you buy a coin, go to VamWorld.com. When at a pawn shop, flea market, coin show (I've seen counterfeit and altered coins there too) you can go on VamWorld.com to quickly check die varieties or characteristics. Always ask the dealer or seller if the rare coin is genuine and HOW DOES HE KNOW? Study a book on counterfeit and/or altered coins and Join a good coin club in your area to learn from others. Happy coin collecting.

Not all Chinese counterfiets have the look of the circulated Morgan Dollars. They are also making "Proof" pieces with a shiny finish. Here a conterfeit Statue of Liberty dollar with the fake finish. Catch the expression on Ms. Liberty's face. She looks as angry to be on this piece as I am to see that it was made!

They also made fake American Silver Eagles a couple of years ago and put them in genunine US Mint boxes with the Certificate of Authenticity. These government boxes can be bought on eBay. They are a by-product of coins that are sent to the slab companies. The finish on these pieces breaks down after a short while ... at least it used to a couple of years ago.

They (Chinese counterfeiters)have even made counterfeit GSA cases and put counterfeit Morgan dollars in them. The appearance is the same as the op coin. They have not been able to replicate cartwheel lustre (yet).

First, why are you buying what you do not understand? I certainly understand many new to this hobby focus desperately on getting that almighty “deal”, but the fact is folks doing so end up losing more than they gain a vast, vast majority of the time, plus provide incentive for scammers to keep upping their game. If you wish to involve yourself in this hobby you really need to learn first.

Secondly, claiming someone has offered more is a common retort from those on the defensive and isn’t something most take seriously. Still, let’s say it is true: now that you know the “coin”, well, isn’t, is it safe to assume you’ll do the right thing and not pass it off on another unsuspecting buyer? That do unto others thing really is good advice.

If you really just want opinions, why not take my initial request to heart and provide the board with more information by removing it from the flip and posting clear photos? It’s one thing for an experienced eye to say it’s no good, but something else altogether to try to educate without the “materials” necessary to do so. Most folks here and genuinely good-hearted and are willing to help, but it’s a two-way street.

  8. When grading Morgans most of the points are given to the observe. need to see that to get a better idea. For an example. I have a 1884-cc with a revers that is to die for. looks like it a proof fresh from the mint. The observe has some bag marks on chin, so I estimate that at ms 64pl. Even though it looks freshly minted the whole way around. Found it in a culled GSA BOX. Way better shape then my 1885-cc gsa N.G.C. MS63s in an uncirculated GSA BOX. BUY THE COIN NOT THE SLAB!

Yeah when I said newbie, I meant to this forum. I've been collecting since I was in elementary, I'm 35 now. I have a lot of Morgan's, just wanted opinions on a specific one. I haven't sold it because I don't want to, I don't rip people off.
