It certainly looks like a Chinese counterfeit from these images.

edit to add - there is no VAM listing with that date position. Case closed...

What was rude about his comment? And if somebody else pointed out that starting three separate topics in two different Coin Talk forums, about the very same piece, is not exactly helpful, that would not be rude either. Don't get me wrong, your questions are welcome here. But it would be helpful if they were all at the same thread.

Oh, and VAM refers to two people named Van Allen and Mallis (hence VAM) who developed a cataloging system for dollar coin (Morgan, Peace) varieties. :)

Actually I don't care what it's worth really, turned down twice what I paid for it. I was asking people's opinions, that's all.

+1 unbelievable. .... you know I'm thinking before I answer or try to help ask one simple question have you read and do you understand the rule here?
I would bet and I'm not a betting person that 99.5% never read the rules.
As if they did they may know how to post images, they would know that such language posted above is unacceptable, and lastly they need to know that we are serious collectors here to assist but not here to be abused because they didn't get the reply or answer they wanted.

When is our job to educate you? What makes you sooooo special that we need to educate you?
Why don't you" Mr know" it all try googling and researching the topic yourself!
Paddyman goes out of his way to welcome members here, he also does share his knowlege and even gives links to references all the time.
We aren't responsible to educate you !
You come in post several threads why because the answer you seek isn't coming fast enough, or it isn't what you want to hear.
Let me tell you several here have welcomed you.....my reply to you... is with your attitude you're in the wrong forum......we welcome those who like all of us share a passion for what we collect.
We don't welcome those who attitudes are self serving and disrupt the norm here on CT!

In my opinion, and I think we've all seen this before, these posters buy something not knowing scratch about coins. They think they've hit the jackpot until they ask real numismatists opinions. Then, learning that they've been taken for a ride with buying junk like this and angry at themselves, they lash out. And postings like the above always remind me of that Brad Paisley song "Online".

if you google "how to identify fake morgan silver dollars"
you'll get a plentiful list of stuff.

The Chinese have been getting better and better at fakes.
so early fakes are very easy to identify once you become more used to looking at details.

morgans have been studied in so much detail in the past that it seems everything is known about the surface of them. So when something just ain't quite right ... it helps to find the fakeness, at least for the ones that look original.

The bad and really bad fakes are "similar" looking for a novice but way, way off from the real thing.

It refers to Van Allen - Mallas die varieties, VAM for short.

In the 19th century decreasing amounts of hand labor went in to making coin dies, which are the tools that are used to strike coins. For American coins, the dies in the 1790s and first part of the 1800s were made almost completely by hand. Therefore there were differences between them, some quite obvious. As the century rolled on, those differences became less obvious.

Despite that, two researchers, LeRoy Van Allen and George Mallas, noticed that there were differences in Morgan Dollar dies. They wrote a book about those varieties, and some collectors collect those coins. Some varieties are quite valuable.

You need the book to spot most of them, however, because to the layperson they are almost indiscernible.

Well could have been interesting discussion if the OP would have taken good pics out of the flip.
