I will guess that the coin had a dip many years ago and the way it was stored was not kind to the obverse. I like the reverse but it's not a natural look.
What type of holder was the coin stored in?

yeah the whole story is suspect.

OP can we see pictures of the other coins and also the safe as you found it?

You say this on a lot of posts. Not sure why and I would like to know what you think you might see if it was pictured raw?

There is nothing right about this toning. AU details.

    seriously?

So that we can clearly see the coin without the interference of the plastic.

    The plastic hides many problems

It just seems to be your "go to" response. For the OPs question I dont see why. If it was slabbed would you ask them to crack out?

nope, I don't have a 'go to' response, I reply to what I see, if it bothers you, ignore me.

I have trouble seeing thru plastic, and nope, I am not an idiot and I wouldn't ask them to crack it out of a slab, unless it was an NNC slab.

perhaps ignore my posts if they bother you

Now who would store valuable coins in a safe in of all places a laundry?? Something just doesnt meet the smell test.

I want to think the best of people, but if this shows up on eBay the same way as the previous set of "laundromat safe" listings -- I'm thinking that one was talking about a "200-year-old building", whose safe included TPG-slabbed coins -- it will be hard.

If possible, removing the coin from the holder is always better. The plastic hides things and causes reflections and hot shots from the lighting. 2X2s are really bad about this.

    Cleaned, then retoned.

It's not slabbed, it's in an airtite type plastic holder which is good because it can be opened. Then photograph the coin on both sides and close back up. Looks like the reverse photo was taken that way.
