Just a bizarre coin. Painted with lacquer and apparently missing the last two letters in “cents”, part of “states” and most of the “A” in America. Grease Filled Die, possibly???

I’m giving it a soak in acetone to try and get rid of the coating. I’ve got basically nothing in this coin, so a little experimentation will be fun. I’ll post post-acetone photos once it sold for a bit. Any thoughts on the missing letters would be appreciated.

I'll go with filled die. The coin looks much better after the bath.

I was going to say a acetone bath would remove the lacquere. I used it on a heavy coated cent. Nice woodie too

Could be grease filled but the missing obv rim makes me wonder about the possibility of the die faces not being parallel.

I have an 1866 missing the “TS.” Assumed grease filled die on this one too.
