hello all, i recently purchased a 1969-d 40% silver Kennedy half and it weighs in at 9.5 grams, severely underweight, could it be a foreign, off-metal planchet, or some other thing?? thanks for replying, john 115805372_620427391923558_1084752775717284710_n.jpg 116016323_733108054149345_3113887772061380979_n.jpg 116053677_773334623209482_2013763362094967480_n.jpg 116268520_3220925151276871_201835990670230192_n.jpg

Yep, that's significantly low, and it doesn't look like it would've lost weight to corrosion or other damage.

I assume you've weighed other 40% halves on the same scale to make sure the scale's accurate?

It might be useful to see obverse and reverse side-by-side photos of this coin with one or two "normal" 40% halves. That would help us tell whether the two faces are different colors, which would help diagnose if it's a missing clad layer. It would also be useful to see an edge photo with a couple of normal 40% halves for comparison.

scale is accurate, weighs pennies in at 2.5 and nickels at 5.0..do not have any loose 40% ers to show comparison to, all the other ones i have are either ms or better and in 2x2 flips already... coin is bright silver on both sides
