It appears to me that when looking at it magnified, the toning in the background has been painted it to enhance it. What do you think?
Not so much painted, but someone was trying to remove stuff and couldn't get it all away from the bust and stars.
My opinion is it's not from removing material it's laying down material as in a liquid. The reverse of the coin does not have this look because it is to small and detailed to apply it in the same manner.
I agree, whenever I see something systematic looking patterns on a coin I think it has been quizzed. Still worth something of course since many will look for a high grade coin at a deep discount.
definitely cleaned, probably with a rag so they weren't able to get the borders of the face and stars
Looks like it was in one of those blue folders we used to take a pencil eraser to when I was in grade school. Got them all nice and shiney back in the 50's.
It's a pity, the coin's grade is pretty high... but no matter what they did, it's just another problem coin now.
Yeah, and thousands of coins in SGS slabs graded MS70 have sold for hundreds of dollars on ebay. Does that even remotely make you think those SGS coins were worth hundreds of dollars ? In other words, just because somebody pays a given amount for a coin, that does NOT mean the coin is actually worth that much.
