I still smile over NGC putting facsimile signatures on the Baseball Hall of Fame series. At least PCGS put actual signatures on their labels.

I got a kick out of the Babe Ruth one. The only autograph I would have gone for on that coin, and I do love it, would be that of the coin's designer Cassie McFarland, who STILL does not acknowledge my proposals of marriage via email.

Not for a dog show, but there was a "scratch and sniff" marijuana leaf.

I'm not sure a dog show is where I want the scratch and sniff to be used :p

PCGS really did seem to catch them with their pants down on that one. They saved the fee from the Hall of Fame rights and then one upped them at the same time.

Wow. I am an old poot just getting into coin collecting. I think you have saved me some bucks by not going with the slab coins. I mostly collect old silver coins close to melt price anyway. That may be wrong also. Heck, I don't know. The grandkids will get them anyway. I am having fun searching anyway.

Gunner - I'm on both sides. I collect some coins in slabs but I also love to go through piles of Mercury dimes and Walking Liberty halves and buying them at near melt prices. I've nearly filled two Mercury dime books and a Walking Liberty book, all just buy going through melt piles of coins. It reminds of being a kid and going through change to fill the holes in my Whitman coin books.

Yep Sundance. I am glad that I am not the only one that looks at melt values. Not sure yet whether that is the correct way to approach coin collecting, but it makes me happy. LOL. I have accumulated some coins in my collection that keeps me interested at an affordable price, by my standards.

In time you might start wanting to get higher graded ones, but if it makes you happy then yea you’re approaching it the right way since that’s really the ultimate goal

Baseball - I agree with you. But you'd be amazed at just how many XF & AU coins I found in the melt piles. Look at the attached photo. The photo doesn't really show the beautiful blue and green tones on the dime. When I'm not filling holes, I'm upgrading. All at the price of melt.

I assume they had some kind of battery in them? If so I wonder what the long term implications are for having a battery in a coin.

Good question. Quite likely at some point the battery will break down and begin to corrode damag the coin unless there is a way to remove it.
