I'm going to disagree with the original post. What, exactly, is the issue? I've been here for a while now, and I have yet been forced to read any thread. I open threads and either read them through and respond, or simply close it and move on to the next one. I may only read the first post or two then realize it is either some rant in which I'm not interested in, some crackpot just spewing dribble or boasting about a coin he does not have, some one who starts numerous inane threads through the course of the day, troll for fun, etc. I don't roll hunt, but I do browse this particular board to see finds and read the rants (some can be pretty entertaining). Same with the "I hate eBay" type threads. The nice thing about this particular message board is I can hover my cursor over the thread link and see the first few lines of the thread. If it interests me I open it. If it doesn't, I slide the mouse to the next thread. Unless the bandwidth or storage being used by these threads you rant about is a issue, I don't really see a problem. If it does, then the admins need to be the ones to handle it. But I'm not having any real issues with the site, so I'll assume bandwidth and server space are not issues at this time.

Not everybody is internet-savvy. I originally found this board doing a Google search for coin-related information after receiving the stuff from my mother-in-law. I lurked for quite a while before actually registering and posting. I know how to use the internet and it's search functions, including the search on this site. HOWEVER, not everyone is an expert on the internet. Many of your grandmothers use the internet, but do they simply read web sites and exchange recipes and can they perform a search involving more than a page or two of results? My four year old granddaughter can access the internet and find her favorite pages with a little help, and from there play her favorite internet games on those sites. But she can't read yet, and couldn't possibly do a Google search (although she does like to say the word "Google"). These are but two extremes, most of us will fall somewhere in the middle. Some people find this site in the same manner I did, lurk, and wait for the right opportunity to post. Some find it, and can't wait to start asking questions.

So give the newbies a break. We're not all IT experts. Some simply don't want to perform the search, but just jump in, join the fray, and interact. Some may not know the search function is even there. If you limit what can and can't be asked, you turn this into simply another web site. That's the beauty of an internet forum, you can interact with other people from different walks of life. In a real life conversation, if you don't like the subject matter, or disagree with the other party, you can argue, or simply excuse yourself and walk away. The same tactic is also appropriate here, and even easier to accomplish (simply click a link).

By the way, I would be willing to bet that a lot of the rant-type threads are started by members who have been here and posted for a while, rather than the new members.
