Well, I don't want to get in the middle of Sasha and 900fine here. I understand it is more difficult for a female to enter into a more male-dominant intellectual arena, but often the ones who do stand out more and become MORE successful than a lot of the men. I am an electrical engineer and work in avionics primarily with male engineers. However, the few females we have are EXTREMELY sharp and usually get promoted faster than the men. Go figure...:headbang:. But in my opinion, since things are tougher from the get-go for the women, they are that much more motivated to work hard and learn in order to stand out. Look at Charmy, she has one of the better eyes for quality in the copper coin arena than most. I don't know her personally, but I can tell that just by looking at her photos. I commend you Sasha for pursuing this hobby, especially at such a young age. Please don't let a little negativity bring you down. Just continue to pave the way and bring more females into this hobby that us guys are sooo passionate about.
Yeah, sorry about that....I have been hiding in my man cave for the past few weeks and counting all my credits that I have.....errr I mean gold coins! :mouth::whistle:
Joining Late... 43 Female here. I wish I had seen this post earlier. I have been collecting coins since I was a little girl. When I would see an "old" coin which to me when I was little were the wheat pennies, I'd put it in my coffee can for safekeeping. I collect coins for several different reasons: 1. I love history and coins are a great way to learn about history 2. I am very analytical and love to research and learn 3. I like the hunt of trying to find a nice coin at a good price or the coin to finish a set That being said, I recently joined a Coin Club because I (being female) do like socializing. I dragged my husband with me (not a collector) and of course everyone at the first meeting thought he dragged me along! My husband is a great sport and explained that he was the tag-along! As to how get more young girls interested in the hobby? My dad would give me coins he found in circulation (wheats, silver) and tell me to keep them as they would some day be valuable -- so guys if you have daughters or grand-daughters (or sons and grand-sons) start taking them to shows and giving them special little treasures, exposure to the hobby is what will get them interested. My step-son has two year twins (boy and girl) and he is buying them proof sets and shows them his coins. Now I am not sure how much they understand but they know the word "coin". So it will be interesting to see if they BOTH join the hobby. Besides coin collecting, many of my other interests (and even my occupation) are mostly male dominated -- could just be the way people who tend to enjoy coins are "wired". Anyway overall I enjoyed this post and got some good laughs from it!
Roslyn, I personally am certainly glad to have you join us here - nice story about how you got involved, and great idea about how to help get kids involved!
